Gratitude journals and Thanksgiving. It all highlights gratitude.
Like it is this trendy thing you should do or the one time of year that you try to make yourself grateful but all it does is frustrate you.
What happens when you don’t feel grateful for anything?
Is Something Wrong with You?
Is the opposite true? Are you ungrateful? Or worse. Are you a bad person for not being able to feel grateful about anything?
Absolutely not! You are beautifully and wonderfully made!
Look, there is nothing like the holiday season being a catalyst to highlight areas in your life where you might feel excitement or even pain. It is normal.
This year I lost my best friend and companion, Mila, my pug of 10 years. After a loss, the “firsts” are hard. All I can think about are memories and traditions, and when I get around family and find someone missing, it hurts.
It is so easy for our hearts to focus on what is missing when a pain is great. It is even harder to focus on the the blessings when we are in those feelings. It doesn’t mean you are ungrateful or a bad person.
Allow me to explain.
Here are Some Truths About Gratitude:
1) It is a practice
Do it even if you don’t feel like it to make the habit. Building habits take practice and practicing gratitude is the same way. It isn’t a feeling. It is a tool for healing. The practice of seeking out things to be thankful for will help to shift your focus.
2) It can be about anything
Sometimes we get hung up on trying to find some profound thing or life altering blessing to be grateful for. But it doesn’t have to be big or world changing. God is in all the details of our life. Gratitude even in the small things is powerful.
3) It is an act of worship and praise
God blesses us in many ways big and small, and when we actually take the time to thank Him and acknowledge Him, we learn of His goodness. Acknowledging His goodness establishes his sovereignty. This pleases Him and in turn will fill your heart as well.
Make a Decision to Choose Blessings Over Feelings
I do this practice daily of at least 5 things. Sometimes making the list comes easy. But sometimes I have to make myself think of things. I’m not always in a good mood to feel grateful. But in the good days and bad, I choose to find my blessings and thank God for them.
So, you aren’t a bad person or ungrateful if you can’t find anything to be thankful for, at first.
But if you choose to shift your focus and find things, even if it the pretty flower weed in your yard, your heart doesn’t know the difference, yet it gets filled the same.
We are human and we have ever changing feelings so it’s okay! That is why we have an amazing God who loves us and blesses us anyway.
That alone is something to list in your gratitude list everyday! See you got a head start! You’re welcome. 😉
If the holiday season is hard for you, I am praying God makes clear his blessings all around you!
