What does it mean to find your voice?
You hear this all the time. Find your voice! But what on earth does that mean?
Does it mean it is some object I lost along the way? And I have to find where it got hidden?
Yes. That is exactly what that means.
And I’ll tell you why.
Because that is what it feels like doesn’t it? Like we lost it and it is in some obscure place that feels impossible to find.
Feeling Like a Puppet
In my previous marriage, I think I played the role of trophy wife really, really well.
I agreed to everything, much to my dismay. #swingerlife (I’m being serious)
In that marriage, I stayed quiet. I was too afraid of not being accepted or being judged if I spoke up about what I wanted, or dreamed of. I did pursue blogging but I kept it like a hobby I did in the background. I told nobody I knew personally about it. I would only talk about it with other bloggers I would connect with. But it was like living a double life.
I ached to be accepted and to have encouragement to pursue what I was doing.
As if I needed anyone’s permission or approval right?
Where Is Your Identity?
We lose our voice when we put our identity in other things. Whether that is a job, a relationship, or a habit.
Whatever it is, we circle back to it before opening up our own voice. We look to it for permission or for guidance.
Fear stops us.
Shame stops us.
Lack of confidence and love for ourselves stop us.
God Made You to Shine
The Bible talks about how a light is to shine and not be hidden under a basket.
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” -Matthew 5:14-16
What Finding Your Voice Means
So in order to begin a journey of finding our voice, let’s understand what it means.
What God Says
He says we are a light. And it almost seems like an obvious fact that we would put a light on a stand right? That’s the obvious place for it. Yet for some reason, we as a light, sometimes put ourselves in a basket. That’s not where it goes. That’s not where we belong.
Purpose for the Individual
Your voice is like a light. In a dark room, your light begins to dispel the darkness. The darkness can’t put the light out. Another person’s voice is a light and does the same for the room. What happens when multiple lights shine? The room is bright! That is the value you add to the world that seems so dark.
The Transformation that Happens
When we act in our calling and live according to God’s will for our lives, we not only come alive and bring life to others, but we make room for more of God in our hearts. Healing begins. So, the more you do it, the stronger your voice becomes!

We aren’t just born with our voice.
We have a voice, but our experiences shape it and God motivates it. He empowers it to be sent out.
